Braise

"I don't begin with colour. I begin with something I can't yet name — a feeling that needs somewhere to go. With Braise*, it was that particular kind of heat that doesn't announce itself. The kind that lives quietly inside something that looks, from the outside, like it has already gone dark. I worked the teal until the canvas felt heavy, almost suffocating. Then the orange came — late, unexpected — and it made everything true. I wasn't painting fire. I was painting what survives it."
