"I didn't set out to paint a figure. I set out to paint warmth — the kind that comes from old walls, from sand that has held the sun all day and releases it slowly at dusk. But somewhere in the ochres, in the pulling of the brush downward, something appeared. I recognized it immediately. I didn't try to clarify it or finish it. I left it the way memory leaves things: soft at the edges, luminous at the centre, impossible to hold."
