"The grey arrived first — vast, quiet, almost peaceful. I spent a long time with it, building the texture on the left, letting the right stay smooth like still water or held breath. I thought the painting was almost finished. Then the red appeared — twice — sudden and certain, the way a fever announces itself. Not as chaos. As a fact. This is what burns underneath. This has always been burning."
