"I wanted to paint the exact moment between two states — not the light, not the dark, but the place where they touch. Everything in this painting was built toward that seam of gold. The white above was laid down first, calm and certain. The black below came later, and it was harder — dense, resistant, full of things that didn't want to be covered. The gold arrived almost last, and it became everything: the threshold neither side can cross."
