"Everything in this painting moves downward. The dark — all that texture, all that weight — presses toward the warm band at the base, which holds its ground without effort, the way earth does. I didn't set out to paint a landscape. But that is what it became: a sky that has decided to descend, and a ground that refuses to give way. The red hiding in the warmth at the bottom is not hope exactly. It is persistence."
