"Some paintings begin with fire. This one begins with what fire leaves. The pale expanse was already there — patient, open, holding its warmth carefully. The black at the center arrived like the memory of something that burned here once, long ago, and slowly settled into the ground. I didn't try to clear it or cover it. Some marks aren't mistakes. They're what the surface chose to keep."
