"Some surfaces carry the weight of what has been inscribed on them. I worked the black until it stopped being paint and started being matter — something mineral, something that had existed long before the brush arrived. The gold didn't come from me exactly. It came through — the way markings do when they've been waiting inside a surface. I don't know what they say. I don't think they were meant for me."
